Use Martingale in the Short Term

The Martingale is a betting strategy that first became popular in 18^th century France. The idea is that you can use the Law of Averages double your bet after every loss, so that the first win would put you back up over the top from all previous losses. For example, if you start at $1 and lose four bets in a row but win on the fifth, you will gain a profit of $1 ($1+$2+$4+$8=$15, then a $16 win on the fifth bet). However, your conscience tells you stop wagering after losing several bets in a row. The risk with the Martingale strategy is that it requires a lot to wager with and that you may hit the table limit.

This betting system is usually played in even money games like the red/black in roulette or the pass/don’t pass bet in craps. Basically, martingale works best as a short term strategy. The longer you gamble, the better your chances of losing. For example, using the Martingale in an 8-hour session results in a 38% chance of success. That is better than flat-betting $5 every time, which has a 22% chance of winning.

Conversely, the Anti-Martingale strategy increases bets after win, and reduces them after a loss. The assumption, which is based off luck, is that the gambler will benefit from the “hot streak” of winning, while reducing losses during a “cold streak” of losing.

1. You have accepted that above-averages losses result in better chances for a win.
2. You have at least $200 in your bankroll for $1 bets, or $1,000 in your bankroll for $5 bets.
3. You are only playing for a few hours.

1. You think it is a guaranteed betting system without the proper knowledge.
2. You don’t have at least $200 for $1 bets or $1,000 for $5 bets.
3. You plan on playing for a long duration of time, especially in American Roulette (5.26% house edge, as opposed to the European Roulette 2.7% house edge).
