Why The D’Alembert Doesn’t Work

If you’ve ever heard of a pyramid scheme, it may have been derived from the D’Alembert System. Like the Martingale but less risky, it is mostly applied to even-chance outside bets and favored by players who want to minimize their overall bets and losses. It started in the mid-1700s by French mathematician Jean le Rond D’Alermbert. The purpose of the strategy is to find a balance between even chance bets, like red and black.

Choose a starting bet above the house minimum but not too high in case you want to raise later. Also, choose an increment. If the bet wins, reduce the bet by the increment amount. If the bet loses, increase it by the increment amount. In other words, if you bet $5 and choose an increment of $1, a winning first bet would result in a $4 second bet. A losing first bet would result in a $6 second bet.

A benefit of this system over others is that your bets don’t increase as fast, enabling you to stop the session after a minimal loss or a win. This system has the most flexibility in the betting. However, as with all strategies, it is not foolproof and the flaw with this one is the roulette wheel has no memory. Each spin is an independent trial with the same odds of a win or loss as the previous spin. Overall, having a 0 and 00 on the wheel will result in you losing a small percentage of your wager. Or, there could be long runs of losses, causing you to keep increasing your bet. Success only comes from a balance of wins and losses starting from a series of negative spins.

The idea of the D’Alembert is that if you win, you will bet less on your next spin since you think your chances of winning again is smaller than before. However, the probability of a win on your next spin is the exactly the same, not less. Picture flipping a coin for heads and tails. If you get heads on the first flip, you have the same 50/50 chance to get heads on the next flip. You could get head 1,000 times in a row or it could alternate with each flip. This is similar to roulette. The strategy is not in betting systems, but rather in the betting layout.
