If you’re looking for a solid roulette strategy, look no further. The En Prison rule lowers the house edge for even money wagers down to 1.35%. It’s hard to find though as only a select few casinos in Vegas have it.

The rule applies to outside bets on 0 or 00. Let’s say you bet $8 on red and get zero. With the rule, the dealer gives you the option of losing half your bet ($4) or going into prison, where a marker is put on top of your bet that reads “En Prison.” You can get half the bet back and move on or stay in prison, giving you three scenarios on the next spin:

1. 1. If 0 or 00 show, you lose the $8.
2. 2. If black shows (since you bet red), you lose the $8.
3. 3. If red shows, the “En Prison” marker is removed and you keep the $8.

Some casinos use the rule differently, like if players placed bets in a red pocket and the ball rests in a red pocket with a different number, the players get half their bet back. Since the rule differs, it’s important to ask casino employees or check the fine print on their roulette rules.

A similar rule is called Le Partage, which offers the same house edge reduction but doesn’t give you the option to let it ride. Instead, you get half your stake back and that is the end of it. This rule is used in single zero roulette on even money bets.

The En Prison Rule is offered widespread in Europe as roulette accounts for over 50% of revenues compared to only 5% in the U.S., where many casinos use double-zero wheels but don’t allow the rule. Look carefully for the rule as some of the biggest European online casinos don’t offer it either like Ladbrokes, Blue Square, Virgin, Paddy Powder and Bet365.
