Las Vegas Hard Rock CEO Commits Suicide

randy_t178Randy Kwasniewski, CEO of the Las Vegas Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, was found dead in his Las Vegas home Tuesday, reportedly from a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head. His wife found him and coroners determined it was a suicide yesterday.

Kwasniewski, 56, had been CEO of the Las Vegas Hard Rock since February of 2007 when New York-based boutique hotel operator Morgans Hotel Group bought the resort. He was overseeing a $750 million expansion that would add two hotel towers, casino space and a larger concert hall.

Morgans CEO Fred Kleisner will take over for the time being. Morgans owns 14% of the hotel-casino and operates the off-Strip property.

“I’ve known and worked with Randy since 1995,” Kleisner said. “He was not just one of my colleagues and a leader of our company, he was my friend. I know few hotel and casino executives who have the knowledge, focus and work ethic that Randy possessed. I will miss him. All of us at Morgans are deeply saddened by the passing of Randy. I know I speak for everyone when I say we all mourn his loss. Randy was a dedicated husband and father, a friend to many of us, and a valued colleague. Our hearts and prayers go out to his family.”

Kwasniewski had worked in the hotel industry for 30 years. Prior to Morgans, he served as Senior V.P. of Starwood Capital Group where he helped acquire the Societe du Louvre and Le Meridien. Before that, he was V.P. of Operations for the Las Vegas Hard Rock, overseeing all hotel, food and beverage, retail, and facilities staffs and operations. There has been no news of any suicide note left behind from Kwasniewski.
