Roulette draws its roots from Monte Carlo and the French Riviera, evoking images of large groups of men in tuxedos and women in fancy dresses. It may be the classiest game in the casino but it’s also one of the simplest, where the strategy lies solely in the betting. You can make any amount of bets, up to the table limit, on any one spin. You place your bets on the corresponding number, series of numbers, or colors (red or black) on the table layout.

Listen closely to the dealer as play moves fast. The dealer accepts bets in between spins and sometimes after dropping the ball if it hasn’t started slowing down yet. Listen for the dealer to say, “no more bets” or “place your bets” when playing. After a winning number is determined, the dealer places a clear marker on that number on the table layout. Losing bets are cleared off the table and the winner is paid out.

Generally, the table layout for betting in roulette has 48 boxes—one for each number on the wheel colored red, green or black to match the wheel, plus 11 boxes around the perimeter for special bets such as odd/even, red/black and high/low. Bets on specific numbers are deemed “inside bets,” while all other bets are “outside bets.”
