    Top Hatting

“Top hatting” is an illegal technique of winning at roulette. It is similar to past posting, or posting a bet after “no more bets” has been called by the dealer. The difference is top hatting involves the dealer.

The dealer and player, or players, are in on the scheme. The dealer places a chip on the winning number after the ball lands. It’s the most profitable when the dealer places only one chip, raking in a payout of 35 to 1. For example, a $25 chip on one number will result in an $875 win. Keeping it under the radar of casino security is the problem. Surveillance cameras and pit bosses are there to watch for any sort of suspicious activity. Dealers and players who try top hatting or illegal activities like it end up in jail.

A few years ago in the UK, three men were convicted for top hatting in roulette at a casino. The three used fake identities to sneak into casinos and con them for thousands of dollars for weeks at a time. In their version of top hatting, one man would secretly place a chip on the winning number while distracting staff monitoring the game. The trio got their information from another man who wrote a manual of instructions of cheats like how to carry out the top hatting move and obtain false identification papers. The trio’s homes were searched, containing numerous false identity documents and some crack cocaine. Each of the men pleaded guilty to the Fraud Act 2006 and the Identity Cards Act 2006. They all served jailtime and some were banned from casinos.
